Mum 'drowns twin two-year-old boys in bath before trying to kill their younger brother'

Accused: Police say Mireya Alejandra Lopez admitted drowning the tots in the bath

A mother has admitted killing her two-year-old twin boys by drowning them in the bath, authorities claim.

Mireya Alejandra Lopez was allegedly attempting to drown a third child at a home in Avondale, Arizona, when a family member raced to help the youngster just in time.

According to police, officers were called to the home just before 12pm on Sunday.

They found the two young boys on a bed, completely unresponsive.

The officers then frantically began trying to save the two young boys with resuscitation techniques but were unable to revive them.

Emergency services then raced the twins, who have not been named, to hospital where they were later pronounced dead.
Arrested: Lopez, 22, was taken away by police after a family member called 911

Lopez, 22, was then arrested and questioned over the deaths.

Sgt Brandon Busse, Avondale Police Department, later revealed that she admitted that she: "intentionally drowned both of her twin boys in the bathtub.”

According to AZfamily.com, in a media statement, Sgt Busse added: "Mireya also stated to investigators that she also attempted to drown another child in the home but she was stopped by family.”

Lopez has been charged with two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide.

The investigation is ongoing.
