Johannesburg - A man driving his wife to hospital slammed into an accident scene in Durban in the early hours of Sunday morning, paramedics said.
Paramedics and police were at the first accident along the N2 outside Durban near the old airport early on Sunday morning helping a driver who had been flung from of his vehicle after crashing into a concrete barrier.
Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said his colleagues and other services were on the scene when they heard brakes screeching.
Botha said the emergency services workers ran to get away from the scene, jumped onto the concrete barrier and witnessed the vehicle slamming into the ambulance with such force that the side door flew off and the vehicle was flung into the police van.
''A report from a passenger is that the man was taking his wife to a Durban hospital for admission when he collided into the emergency vehicles,'' said Botha.
Pictures of the scene show that two emergency vehicles branded with Isipingo-based PT Alarms, and a silver passenger vehicle were badly damaged.
Botha said medics stabilised the patients at the scene before transporting them to a local hospital for the care that they required.
