Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has blamed the naivety of Ed Woodward for David de Gea’s failed transfer from Manchester United on deadline day.
Speaking on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser Perez said: ‘I think what they lack is experience. It happened last year with [Fabio] Coentrao, exactly the same. And it happened with Ander Herrera and Athletic Bilbao. They have a new team and they lack experience.
‘We have missed out on players before, Franck Ribery and Patrick Vieira for example, but what is surprising is that someone wants to do a deal and only starts the process 12 hours before.
'It’s the inexperience of the new people in charge. We have worked with them before [without problems], with Peter Kenyon and David Gil and with Sir Alex Ferguson.

De Gea saw a deadline day move to Real Madrid collapse after the deal failed to be completed in time |
‘We still have good relationship with Manchester United but this is the exactly the same as happened before with Coentrao and Herrera and we thought they would have learned from what happened in the past.’
Perez reiterated much of what Madrid said in their ten-point statement on Tuesday. He said it was Jorge Mendes that informed Real Madrid at midday that United were ready to negotiate the sale of De Gea having said all summer that they were not interested in selling him.
He claims that a deal was agreed in half an hour but that United then took eight hours to send back contracts that were sent to them at 1.30pm. ‘I don’t want to blame anyone but it took eight hours,’ he said.
De Gea must now decide between renewing with Manchester United or running down the final year of his contract. Perez said he did not know what would happen now but that De Gea had been ‘very affected’ by what had happened.
He also dismissed United’s offer to help Real Madrid push the late deal through with Fifa. ‘They entered into Fifa [the transfer matching system] at 00.00 and we entered at 00.02 so it was too late. The offer from them was to make them look good. It was an offer from people who are not experts in the world of football.’
