The driver of the matatu that ran over pedestrians on Moi Avenue on October 22, 2015, being assisted by St Johns Ambulance personnel.
At least six pedestrians were on Thursday, evening badly injured after they were run over by an overlapping matatu.
The driver of the vehicle who was enroute to Gachie from the CBD attempted to overlap but lost control of the vehicle on Moi Avenue near Bazaar Building plunging into the six who included street hawkers in the 7pm incident.
Angry members of the public pulled out the driver of the vehicle and beat him senseless before he was rescued by a traffic police officer.
He was later taken to hospital by St Johns Ambulance personnel together with the injured.
Witnesses said some of the pedestrians were trapped under the matatu but were quickly pulled out by good Samaritans.
“The driver realised there was a huge traffic snarl up and he decided to use the wrong lane but the brakes either failed or he was unable to control the vehicle and it plunged into some pedestrians leaving them badly injured,” said an agitated member of the public.
“Matatu drivers who use this route are very careless and that is why he has been beaten up,” added another witness.
According to Nairobi Central police boss Mr Paul Wanjama, the driver of the ill fated matatu was trying to use the wrong side of the road to join Khoja roundabout.
"Two of the injured are in a critical condition, two others are stable while another two were slightly injured," he added.
There was heavy traffic on both sides of the Avenue and adjacent streets following the accident.
The accident happened just a few metres from where a 23- year-old woman was crushed between two matatus leading to her death.
