Five remanded over death of young woman

Court Mallet Law

Five men suspected of murdering a senior high school graduate at Dansoman have been remanded in police custody by the Accra District Court.

The court, presided over by Mr Stephen Owusu, remanded Constable Clifford Atsutsey, Isaac Donkor, Frank Obeng, Richard Acquah and Constable Wisdom Trabulsi Agbemordzi, during their appearance in court after the investigator in the case informed the court that a DNA test result was not ready.

The court, therefore, adjourned the case to February 10,2016.

Inspector Godsway Amedzi told the court that the medical facility contracted to perform the test was yet to furnish the police with the results.

He, however, informed the court that investigations were far advanced and his outfit had already forwarded the docket on the case to the Attorney General's Department.

Making a case for the accused persons, Mr George Bernard Shaw, a lawyer, appealed to the court to ensure that Constable Clitford Atsutsey and Constable Wisdom Trabulsi Agbemordzi were given medical reports to indicate that they were not well.

According to him, Agbemordzi and Atsutsey were suffering from chicken pox and tuberculosis, but the hospital was refusing to provide his clients with the said report.

Responding to the concerns of the counsel, the court stated that the hospital did not need a court order before providing the accused persons with the medical reports.

It, therefore, called on the hospital to release the medical reports to the accused persons.

Twenty-three-year-old Veracity Janice Oteng, who was also a house help, was found dead in a swimming pool in the house of her employer at Dansoman on August 16, 2015.

The owner of the house, Mr Ato Essien, a renowned businessman, and his family had travelled to the USA on a holiday at the time of the incident.

Both the police and Janice's family have confirmed that the businessman had travelled.

Obeng and Acquah were two private security men who ran day and night shifts in the house while Donkor was the houseboy, with Constable Clifford Atsutsey and Constable Trabulsi Agbemordzi as the armed policemen running day and night shifts there.
